Q: How much does siding cost?

A: It depends on the size of the job and the material selected. Siding is priced by the square foot of area and by the linear feet of eaves and overhangs. Other factors include the number of windows to trim around, rotten wood replacement and any additional work.

Q: How long will siding last?

Q: What surfaces can you place siding on?

A: We can place all types of siding on any home or business. In most cases we will remove the existing siding, but if your existing siding is in good condition, and the proper type, to save you money we could go over the top. Most customers like the thought of an almost maintenance free home with the beautiful appearance of siding.

Q: What if I do not want to keep the same colors forever?

A: While it would defeat the concept of a “maintenance free home”, any type of siding can be painted. We recommend consulting with a professional painter first, to make sure the correct preparation and materials are used.

Q: What color should I use for my siding?

A: We recommend driving around your neighborhood to get a feel for some ideas of what color or accents you may want. Keep in mind, today there are many color selections available; you may choose to blend-in or stand-out in your neighborhood.

Q: Do I need insulation?

A: Yes, it is recommended. If your home was built before 1960 you have little or no insulation. If your home was built before 1990 you have no vapor barrier. In either case adding additional insulation can save you money on heating and cooling bills. It also quiets your home from outside noises.

Q: Do you cover over rotten wood?

A: No, all rotten wood should be replaced, and in some communities a building inspection may be required. Rotten wood is normally caused by water damage from worn paint (which allows water penetration or lack of gutters and downspouts where needed. Rotten wood invites bug infestation.

Q: Will siding help save on heating and cooling bills?

A: Yes. Energy savings can exceed 20%, depending on the actual wood area covered and the type of insulation.

Q: What special accessories are offered?

A: Major manufacturers offer a variety of special trim and accent pieces. Items like special 3-piece corners, fish scales, beaded soffit panels, window and door treatments, as well as different moldings, all to imitate older style homes, or add character to your home.

Q: Why should I choose vinyl siding over other exteriors?

A: One of the most significant factors in choosing to install vinyl siding is the cost. About half the price of wood, brick, and other materials, vinyl is the most economical choice. And if it’s the natural look that’s important, improvements in vinyl siding now allow for a wide variety of colors and textures, including some types that resemble actual wood. The value goes far beyond the look, however. Vinyl never rots, dents, flakes, scratches, blisters, or peels. Not only does vinyl protect, preserve, and increase the beauty of your home, it doesn’t conduct heat and provides superb energy conservation.

Q: How do I maintain my vinyl siding?

A: The best feature of vinyl siding maintenance is that it’s minimal. The only maintenance required on a regular basis is cleaning, which can be done with the spray from a garden hose. For dirt or mildew spots that may build up where the sun doesn’t hit the home, you can use a soft-bristled long-handled brush and some mild detergent. Power washers can also be used to clean vinyl siding, but be sure to use a low pressure setting.

Q: How weather resistant is vinyl siding?

A: Vinyl allows the material underneath to breathe, which helps resist mold and mildew while at the same time diverting water away from the sub-wall underneath, reducing water damage and making sure water doesn’t reach interior walls. Also, most vinyl is rated for winds up to 110 miles per hour. Nevertheless, should your vinyl be damaged, replacing vinyl siding is much easier than repairing or replacing other exterior surfaces.

Q: Why are price estimates so different for vinyl siding?

A: Price estimates are based on many variables, such as how much of the current exterior needs to be removed or whether any damaged wood must be replaced. Although new vinyl can sometimes be layered over existing siding, there are occasions when the old siding must be removed, and this can increase costs. Overall, the cost, maintenance, appearance, and durability of vinyl siding replacement far surpass that of other home exterior options.

Q: What happens to my old siding?

A: After installing your new siding, soffit and fascia Sunshine Siding & Window Co. will dispose of the old material from your property properly.
